Understanding Colic

What is colic in babies?

Colic refers to frequent, prolonged bouts of crying in a healthy baby, often linked to wind or digestive discomfort. It usually appears around 2–6 weeks of age and improves by 3–4 months.

Signs may include intense crying (often in the late afternoon or evening), a flushed face, clenched fists, knees drawn up to the tummy, and a bloated or hard abdomen.

Read more about the signs your baby might have colic.

The exact cause is unknown, but it may be linked to immature digestion, wind or overstimulation. Every baby is different.

Some parents notice a difference within a few feeds, while others may take a few days. Every baby responds differently.

No. While colic can be distressing for both baby and parents, it is not harmful. However, always speak to a healthcare provider if you are concerned.

If your baby has a fever, poor feeding, vomiting, or symptoms that worsen, seek medical advice. Trust your instincts—if something doesn’t feel right, contact your doctor.
